The Off-Season

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

The off-season is the time for teams to try to get better. Whether it’s through practicing or by watching opponents film, there is always something a team could do to make themselves better in the end.

Many players have a routine that they follow that contributes to their big success. One player’s routine consisted of wearing mismatched socks. He felt like that somehow made his team lucky so he didn’t stop doing it. It is really like being jinxed or feeling superstitious.

It’s also a matter of personal opinion. History does indicate that following a pattern prior to each game does something good. I am not sure if that’s true or not but the few players that have publicly announced their routines seem to be a part of a winning organization.

I’m not sure if anyone noticed this or not but every year it seems as if the preseason proves to be the opposite of the regular season. In recent years the teams that had the best preseason records seemed to do nothing in the regular season. On the other hand, the teams that had the worst preseason records seemed to make big noise in the playoffs.

Teams like the Braves don’t have to rely on making the playoffs to see their Atlanta Braves merchandise sell because that is a franchise that people love all over the world.

Milwaukee Brewers

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Milwaukee’s Braun won the national league rookie of the year. There were many candidates on the ballot.

There is always controversy about every category in baseball. This rookie of the year award was no different. That’s why it’s a good idea for people to go online and vote for rookie of the year so their vote can be cast.

This country is varied in opinions even when there is an obvious choice on the front-runner.

Milwaukee still should feel jinxed in a way. They go from being one of the worst teams in the central division to being the best team– at least that’s how it turned out for most of the year. Everyone knows that the Cubs came back and won the central pennant race in the last two months of the regular season.

Milwaukee just has to work on being more consistent. One thing that has been consistent about the Brewers this year is their fans. Their fans have come to every game, filling most of the stadium up each time. They brought Milwaukee Brewers merchandise to every game while they cheered their team on to a second place divisional finish. They went through long winning streaks and long losing streaks. Maybe next year will be the turning point for their franchise.

Joe Torre’s new managing job

Friday, November 9th, 2007

Joe Torre is now the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and I think that’s the best team he could manage out of his options. After he was given the managerial job, Torre was seen with his first Los Angeles Dodgers merchandise—a cap. I remember Joe Torre said last month “I do not want to manage a team that’s not going in the direction of a championship.” I don’t think anyone can argue with him on that statement. He knows about the history of the Dodgers franchise. That should not come as a surprise that Joe Torre wants to manage a team that is known for the right reasons. If you look at the Yankees, it was the same way. Before he arrived to be the manager of the Yankees, they had already won more championships than any other franchise. Then he came there and added more world series to their already magnificent dynasty franchise.

I don’t blame Torre. Why would he want to go to a franchise that has more losses than wins in the past ten years? Then again, sometimes a person may want to manage a team that has a losing record for the simple fact that the team can only get better. The odds are in their favor when it comes to surpassing last year’s record. However, Torre made it very clear that he wants to be a part of a winning organization.

A Rod, A Rod, A Rod

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Other than the World Series, there is no other big baseball topic that is talked about than Alex Rodriguez future. Alex, Alex, Alex! There apparently was a problem with A Rod opting out of his contract because it was announced during the World Series, which was bad timing by the Yankees. That’s mostly the only name mentioned when talking about the New York Yankees. I remember when the media tried to ask Derek Jeter about what was Alex Rodriguez going to do to win the game. All Jeter would say is what we are going to do. It’s frustrating enough that the media keeps talking about A Rod when Derek Jeter’s performance has been good too. Both are clutch hitters. Well, since A Rod opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees, the overall staff vowed to let him go. I wonder what team will try to pick A Rod up. It doesn’t matter who plays because New York Yankees Merchandise will still sell. A lot of the experts say that they think he’s going to play for the Boston Red Sox next year. That would be a bad blow because the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are arch rivals. Many people have said that the Boston Red Sox were cursed. I don’t know how you can be cursed when Boston has won two championships in the last four years. Now they have won seven total championships in their franchise history which dates back more than a hundred years.
